An epic fairy-tale style adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale, spiced with humour.
The classic tale by Hans Andersen has been adapted by Ben Oldfield into a script suitable for a school production. The play’s themes are fundamental – Love, in the form of childhood innocence, triumphs over cynicism and despair. The Snow Queen represents the temptation of power and domination. Gerda ultimately defeats this force through love, loyalty, fortitude and resilience. Her integrity is too great a power for the Snow Queen; the spell is broken and her friend is released.
The production has an epic fairytale style, spiced with humour and comic characters. There is a poignant through-line of hope and never giving up, shown through Gerda’s increasingly difficult trials. The show features a blend of complementary styles, incorporating dance, live music, song, ensemble physical theatre and imaginative staging with a clear design aesthetic.
There is a strong female central character, and opportunities for a large cast in a variety of roles.
