The Captain’s Gig

Description

Sitting right above the tiny harbour at Charlestown with views of the tall ships moored below, The Captain’s Gig is a lovely 18th Century terraced cottage sympathetically updated to provide delightfully comfortable holiday accommodation. Many a Poldark scene has been filmed here, with the unspoilt harbour cottages and beautiful square-rigged tall ships providing a wonderfully authentic backdrop to the historic storyline.

With a snug sitting-room housing a warming wood-burner in the inglenook fireplace and a window seat looking out to the harbour, beach and sea beyond, you’ll be able to watch the comings and goings of this bustling little harbour whatever the weather. Lovingly and thoughtfully decorated and furnished, this gorgeous little cottage is the perfect place for families and couples alike.

The Captain’s Gig is located next door to The Copper House (3810), making it the ideal base for groups of up to nine adults.

The historic port of Charlestown is a living museum to the bygone age of sail, with tall ships frequently moored in the narrow harbour. Sensitively restored, The Captain’s Gig retains many original features with sash windows, low doorways and slate flagstones all enhancing the period feel and making this delightful little cottage truly welcoming. The uncluttered interior enhances the space, making this somewhere you can truly relax and feel at home. There is a spacious Shaker-style kitchen and a glass-roofed dining-area that allows light to flood in. The contemporary bathroom has a bath and walk-in shower, perfect for washing down little ones after a day on the beach. Upstairs, the master bedroom has views over the harbour and coastline, and an en suite shower-room. Bedroom 2 has a double bed and leads through to Bedroom 3 with a single bed, perfect for families with younger children. Both bedrooms look out over the long garden at the rear, an unexpected space in a village centre location and a wonderful space for children to play.

Accessed by steps just outside the kitchen, the garden is enhanced by a fenced deck area complete with inset lights, just the spot for a leisurely evening meal on balmy summer nights. A short walk along the harbour provides not just splendid sights, but access to the beaches either side of the harbour entrance, the coastal footpath, a choice of pubs, restaurants, village shops and cafes. If you can drag yourself away from this wonderful location, visits to the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the fishing port of Mevagissey and the pretty sailing town of Fowey are all within easy reach.
