Whistlefish

Description

Whistlefish is a beautifully appointed cottage just minutes from Fowey’s bustling harbour and narrow streets, where an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, local bakeries and award-winning eateries await discovery. Tucked halfway down a very steep pedestrian hill, the cottage is furnished and equipped to an impeccable standard. A seamless blend of whitewashed walls, wonderful artwork, crystal chandeliers and original stained glass enhance the lovely interior, where a big open plan living-room provides ample opportunity to spend family time together. Three lovely bedrooms and a family bathroom complete the three-storey accommodation, with a ground floor shower-room too.

Locally-sourced goodies and luxurious toiletries are provided on arrival for a truly welcoming touch.

There are sandy beaches, secret coves, boat trips and coastal footpaths all within walking distance in this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The big, light-filled open plan living-room in Whistlefish has bleached floorboards and plantation shutters, a Smart TV, Blu-ray DVD player and an iPad/iPod dock. There are deep linen sofas covered with cushions and throws, shelves full of books and DVDs, a painted dining-table and candy-coloured chairs. The kitchen-area has a Stoves mini range cooker and a retro fridge/freezer to chill your holiday drinks, with a Nespresso machine for your essential morning coffee. There are three lovely bedrooms, two twin rooms on the first floor and a big double bedroom on the floor above, with a south-facing dormer window with views of the river, and a super-king size bed. The two cosy twin bedrooms on the floor below have lovely linens, rugs and cushions, and are close to the family bathroom, with an additional shower-room on the ground floor. All bedrooms have built-in wardrobes with hanging space and shelves, reading lights, snuggly blankets and hot water bottles for chillier nights (although with super-efficient German-sourced electric central heating, they are unlikely to be needed!). There is Egyptian cotton bed linen and superb quality non-allergenic bedding.

Steep cottage stairs lead up to the bedrooms, so take care with children here and outside too, where steps lead to a raised deck (securely fenced with safety glass) with fabulous views down over rooftops to the river below, an ideal spot for sitting as the sun goes down, enjoying a chilled glass of wine and watching the lights of the town and the boats on the water gently twinkle in the dusk.

There is an outdoor laundry-room with a washing machine/drier and a drying line, perfect for drying towels and swimsuits after a day at the beach.

Fowey is a quintessential coastal town with terraced cottages perched on the hilly, narrow streets leading down to the water and hundreds of yachts bobbing on their moorings. There are many activities throughout the year, with Regatta Weeks, the Fowey Festival of Words and Music, Fowey River Big Gig and BBQ Weekend and Christmas Markets, so there is plenty to do whatever time of year you visit. All the town’s facilities are on hand from the cottage, and there are ferries across to Polruan, Mevagissey and Bodinnick. Par station (on the Paddington to Penzance main line) is only four miles away, so you can even pop down by train and leave the car at home.

If you are driving, children and luggage can be off loaded at the top of the lane (50 yards away but steep) before dropping the car off in the town car park further up the hill (weekly parking can be purchased at the machines in the car park, for approximately £42 a week).

There is plenty to do, with sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding tuition all available locally, Readymoney Cove is a lovely sandy beach just a short walk away and eating out is a must: Sam’s in Fowey or Sam’s on the Beach (the latter overlooks the water at Polkerris) both have a great reputation and serve delicious food (and cocktails!), while The Old Quay House in Fowey is a lovely building which offers a luxurious restaurant with fabulous water views.
